We’re a season behind in Lost. During the first season, the show was on at 7:00 pm here. We watched the first episode. My five year old was barely three then. In a - for lack of a phrase that probably does it justice - completely horseshit parenting move, we let him watch it with us. He hasn’t stopped asking about plane crashes since, and we learned a good lesson about his then-newly-developed ability to understand, but not completely process, serious adult concepts.
We did not repeat the mistake. Instead we waited for Season 1 to come out on video, avoided the better-slotted Season 2 because we hadn’t finished the first, and now we are power-watching Season 2. So, at the moment, we’re obsessed with the Losties and their island. And, the other night, after a few episodes, my husband asks me…
“Which character on Lost would you…”
Ooh, fun, I love this game, I think.
“Definitely Sawyer” I quickly interject.
He stares at me blankly.
“That’s not what I was going to ask.”
Oops.
“Really. Sawyer, huh?” he continues. “I thought it would be Jack.”
Then, we have a brief discussion about my bad boy phase… (the thing about my bad boy phase being that I never actually had such a phase).
“While we’re on that subject,” I say “Who would you?”
“Umm. They’re all pretty hot.”
Typical man.
Then I remember ..
“Oh – what were you actually going to ask?” I say.
“Who would you be the most like if you were stuck on the island?”
I found that to be a much more difficult question. Then I stumbled on this internet test. I love internet tests, but I was a little creeped out by the results of this one. For those of you who think I need to reveal a little more personal information, I have copied the results here for your edification:
“You scored 79% kindness, 36% courage, 31% seedy past, and 41% secretiveness!
You are Walt. You’re a kind person who is eager to talk to everyone and absorb all the crazy things that are going on around you. Since you are still so young, you’re not very brave, but your father will be able to show you how to be courageous. Your mysterious psychic powers are kind of creepy, but everyone needs a hobby, right?Your polar opposite is: Sawyer. You are similar to: Claire and Sun.”
Walt? I’m Walt? At least a half dozen beautiful women on that island, and I’m Walt.

Turns out, despite my constant ranting, I’m a certifiable optimist. Are you?

My cold must be improving because my inner snark seems to be returning… There’s an article on msn this morning about women and guilt.
It’s the usual article meant to make you stop feeling guilty about the little things you’ll never stop feeling guilty about. The author discusses common things that might make a woman feel guilt, and then she quotes some professionals who cite ways to learn to feel less guilty about them. That is all good. But some of the examples … well, the examples are just plain weird.
I quote: “Want to stop playing the self-blame game? Here’s how to handle those squirm-inducing situations in all the major aspects of your life. … Does this sound familiar? Your husband dozed off at someone’s wedding.”
“Does this sound familiar: Your husband dozed off at someone’s wedding[?]”
Umm… does that happen a lot? I’m the guiltiest mom around, but I have to say that’s one I haven’t lost sleep over. My husband is usually pretty good about keeping the eyes open at people’s nuptials. And if he didn’t… well I think I am pretty confident that I wouldn’t be feeling guilty about it.

I have nothing original to say this morning. I blame the germs who live in my home. They steal my sweet kids and replace them with shrieking, whiny, red-nosed sneezers who can’t stop sniffling. They steal my clean house (who am I kidding my pretty dirty house) and replace it with a really dirty house full of used kleenex, half-eaten bowls of chicken soup, medicine bottles, etc. They steal my sleep and my oxygen. Now they’ve stolen my creativity.
You can thank the germs, though. Because instead of my tortured rambling, I am going to link you to some really good stuff put forth by others that I know you will enjoy.
Over the weekend Adam at ALOTT5MA provided a link to a clip of Prince singing with the Muppets. Take the time. It will definitely make you smile.
I also have found a new blog I enjoy - News Moms. These bloggers are two women in DC in the news business - they connect the important stories of the day to their own lives as working parents. Good stuff. In one post they referenced this article by Anna Quindlen where Quindlen discusses the importance of protecting our kids from negativity with the same fervor with which we protect them from the negative. Teaching them to enjoy life is important; it’s a good reminder.
Taking my cue from Quindlen, I am off to give ear infection medication and wipe noses. Then I am going to tell them the best thing about being sick is that you get to lay on the couch and watch TV while your mom waits on you. That is actually one of my most pleasurable memories of my youth - shout out to my mom.
